What is foot pain?
Pain in the foot can arise from a number of different causes. Foot pain can be described as sharp, stabbing, dull or throbbing. It can also feel like a tingling or burning sensation (paresthesia), which is common in conditions such as diabetes that can damage the peripheral nerves (peripheral neuropathy). Foot pain may be mild to severe in intensity and occur only at certain times of day or when you perform certain activities. Moving your foot or ankle may either worsen or relieve the pain. With severe pain related to traumatic injuries, it may be impossible to move the affected foot at all.

In some cases, foot pain is localized. Yet even when the pain is restricted to one foot (unilateral), it may occur only on the top of the foot (dorsum), the bottom of the foot (plantar surface), the heel, the ankle, or the toes. Plantar fasciitis is an example of a condition in which pain is felt primarily at the bottom of the heel.

Foot pain may be recent in origin (acute) or develop over time (chronic). In some situations, foot pain can occur as a result of chronic medical conditions you may have that affect your entire body, such as arthritis, vascular disease, or diabetes.

Although life-threatening complications of foot pain are rare, seek immediate medical care (call 911) for injuries that involve profuse bleeding or tissue damage. In rare cases, infections of the bone (osteomyelitis) or skin and soft tissues (cellulitis) of the foot can spread throughout the body, resulting in shock and organ failure. Another rare but potentially life-threatening cause of foot pain is cancer of the bones or soft tissues in the foot.

Kobe Bryant's surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon was successful, however the Los Angeles Lakers star will be sidelined for at least six to nine months as he recuperates, the team and doctors said today.

Bryant, 34, tore his left Achilles' tendon in the closing minutes of Friday night's game against the Golden State Warriors.

The All-Star shooting guard, who has carried the Lakers all season, hobbled to the free throw line after the injury to take his two free throws for being fouled. He hit them both, tying the game 108-108, before going to the locker room. The Lakers went on to win the game.

Bryant, who was averaging 27.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists,was operated on by Dr. Neal ElAttrache and Dr. Stephen Lombardo of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Group.

Bryant, the NBA's fourth all-time leading scorer, has dealt with injuries in the past, but never one as serious and potentially career-ending as this one.

"You need your Achilles' tendon, muscle, tendon here, to allow you to walk," said Dr. Robert Klapper, chief of orthopedic surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Group.

With the athlete's discipline and determination, though, Klapper said, it's possible he could make a comeback.

Bryant took to Facebook on Saturday to vent his frustration at the injury that ended his season.

"All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I've done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen?!? Makes no damn sense," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Nevertheless, the basketball star vowed to return to the court.

"One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence," he wrote. "Today is NOT that day."

Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)


Always apply the tape on clean feet and keep your feet dry. The effectiveness of taping is based on level of plantar fasciitis In acute cases, plantar fasciitis taping only may not be sufficient to decrease the pain and should be used in addition to arch support or over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen. However, pain relievers do not cure the real cause. That is why plantar fasciitis taping is most effective when combined with treatments techniques that are not meant for symptom relief only but deal with the root reason of the pain as well.

You should also be doing gentle calf stretching exercises. This will reduce stress on the plantar fascia in two ways. The first manner in which a relaxation of the tension in the calf muscles can help heel pain is that it will reduce the direct pull backwards on the heel bone (calcaneus). The second reason is a little bit more complicated, but essentially it is that a tight achilles tendon and calf muscles causes the rearfoot to move in a manner that causes over pronation as your leg and body move forward over your foot. To strengthen the muscles in your arch toe curls or "doming" can be done.

The repetitive stress of certain conditions or activities commonly leads to plantar fasciitis. Repetitive pressure on the feet from jobs or activities that require prolonged walking or standing on hard on irregular surfaces - or running and exercise - can also lead to wear and tear on the plantar fascia. Aggravating factors, such as being overweight or having poorly cushioned shoes can also add to the cause of plantar fasciitis. The natural aging process (whoopee for me) may also cause tissue in the heels to weaken over time and/or promote wear and tear.

Plantar fasciosis is a foot condition characterized by heel pain and pain in your plantar fascia—a strong and dense connective tissue structure on the sole of your foot that supports your foot arch. This condition has historically been called plantar fasciitis because it was believed that plantar fascia inflammation was the principle underlying cause. Plantar fasciosis is a more accurate name for this condition because it involves degeneration—microtears, cell death—of your plantar fascia, not inflammation. The Mayo Clinic website states that plantar fasciitis is a condition that occurs gradually overtime and can affect people in the morning after getting up out of bed. The cause of plantar fasciitis is thought to be from overuse and irritation of the plantar fascia. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine states that many factors have been looked at regarding the cause of plantar fasciitis, including leg length differences, altered bio-mechanics, low or high arches and improper gait. They state that heel pain can occur from many different factors; no one thing causes plantar fasciitis. Treatmentsplantar fasciitis shoes

During sleep, feet normally point downward, which allows the plantar fascia to contract. Night splints are used to keep the ankle at 90 degrees during sleep instead of allowing the foot to rest in flexion. Abnormal foot structure increases the chance one will develop plantar fasciitis. People with high arches have greater gravitational force across the plantar fascia while feet with low arches roll inward more during with walking putting tension on plantar fasciitis. Night splints can prevent contracture of the calf muscles, control abnormal pronation or the tendency of foot to roll inward, and maintain the anatomical length of the plantar fascia without stretching.

As a large amount of time is spent in bed during sleeping hours, it is important to ensure that the sheets at the foot of the bed do not constrict the foot, leading to plantar flexion in which the foot is bent straight out with the toes pointing. This constricts and thereby shortens the gastroc complex, worsening the condition. A heating pad placed under the muscles of the calf for a few minutes prior to rising may help loosen tension, increase circulation in the lower leg and reduce pain. Also during sleep, a night splint may be used in order to hold the ankle joint in a neutral position.

Diagnostic testing is rarely indicated for the initial evaluation and treatment of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is often called “heel spurs,” although this terminology is somewhat of a misnomer because 15 to 25 percent of the general population without symptoms have heel spurs and many symptomatic individuals do not. 2 Heel spurs are bony osteophytes that can be visualized on the anterior calcaneus on radiography. However, diagnostic testing is indicated in cases of atypical plantar fasciitis, in patients with heel pain that is suspicious for other causes ( Table 1 ) or in patients who are not responding to appropriate treatment.
